Born in Pontevedra, Hugo Portas is a tubist, musicologist, and educator. He holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Oviedo and a degree in Music Performance from Northwestern University in Chicago, supported by a scholarship from Fundación Caja Madrid.
He combines research and teaching at the Conservatori Professional de Música i Dansa de Mallorca with his work as a performer in symphony orchestras such as the Real Filharmonía de Galicia and the Navarra Symphony Orchestra. He also takes part in artistic projects that allow him to explore new expressive possibilities for the tuba, including works such as Dalet (da) and La Desnudez by Daniel Abreu Dance Company.
As a researcher, he is the author of the books The Tuba in Spain I and The Tuba in Spain II.
