DANIEL ABREU

Daniel Abreu was born in Tenerife, which is where his curiosity and interest for physical movement and stage expression began. He obtained a degree in Psychology from the Universidad de Educación a Distancia (University of Education at Distance).

As a performer, he has worked in a variety of national dance and theatre companies and groups in Spain.

He has received a number of prizes, such as: The Jury’s prize for Choreography (Premio del Jurado a la Coreografía) and the Outstanding Dancer’s AISGE Foundation Prize to attend the American Dance Festival (2005) (Premio Fundación AISGE), in Madrid’s XVIII Choreography Contest (Certamen coreográfico de Madrid), as well as Most Distinguished Dancer of the IV Choreography Contest of Maspalomas (1999) (IV Certamen Coreográfico de Maspalomas).

His project of forming a company developed almost imperceptibly in 2004. The sum of his creations and collaborations came together in the concept that is known today as the Daniel Abreu Company.

His first solo piece, “Espera” (“Wait”), marked the beginning of this ongoing creative career which has resulted in around thirty works, amongst which the following stand out:

“Equilibrio” (“Balance”), his most recent production, was premiered in the Museo Nacional Centro de Artes Reina Sofía, in Madrid, and selected for MOV-s, 2010.

“Perro” (“Dog”) was selected to be part of the Red de Teatros Alternativos in 2008 (national Circuit of Alternative Theatres Network), for Aerowaves 2009 and for an AECI 2009-2010 tour around America.

“Nuevamente ante ti fascinado” (“Again I stand in front of you, fascinated”) was premiered in the Veranos de la Villa Festival, in 2008 in Madrid, and was presented in the UIMP in Santander in 2009. In 2010, it was selected for the Red de Teatros Alternativos.

The piece “Los zuecos van hacía sus Buenos hábitos” (“Clogs go towards their good habits”), commissioned by the Nómada Company, was selected from among many other pieces for the Red de Teatros Alternativos in 2008.

“Negro” (“Black”), co-produced between the Centro coreográfico Galego and the Auditorio de Tenerife, was presented in the Zawirowania Festival (Poland), in Baltoppen (Denmark), in Madrid en Danza, (Spain), in ARTIUM y Dansa Valencia, (Spain).

“Ojos de Pez” (“Fish Eyes”), was selected for the Red de Teatros Alternativos in 2007, and received the support of the Casa Encendida “Artistas en residencia” programme, in Madrid. It was presented in, amongst other places, the Festival Pe de Pedra (2007), the Zawirowania Festival (Poland) and the Red Vasca de Teatros (2007) (Basque Theatre Network).

As a result of all this creative work, Daniel Abreu has been invited to give a number of workshops and courses, in which he has shared his creative and personal vision of contemporary dance with students as well as dance and theatre companies:

-Artfusion, Warsaw, 2010
-Aracaladanza, Madrid, 2009-2010
-Teatro Cesc, Brazil, 2009
-IUD, Caracas, 2008
-Arteleku, San Sebastian, 2009
-Centro Párraga, Murcia, 2008
-Teatro de la Abadía, Madrid, 2007
-Teatro Ensalle, Vigo, 2007-2008

He is presently a guest teacher in the Conservatorio Superior de Danza “María de Ávila”, in Madrid, where he gives workshops in which he focuses on the developing of tools for creativity, amongst other aspects.

In parallel, he continues developing his own work without moving away from other creative activities, such as directing projects for other creators. He combines this with stage directing of Provisional Danza (Madrid), and supporting projects initiated by others, such as the programme “Artistas en Residencia” (Madrid, 2009).
