Daniel Abreu was born on the island of Tenerife, where his curiosity and interest for physical movement and staged expression began. Besides his artistic education as a dancer and choreographer, he has a degree in psychology, which has been present in his choreographic work through the careful narrative and poetic symbolism.
As a performer he has worked with different dance and theatre companies, though it is in his company where he has further developed a specific language. Due to his creative work he has been invited to lead workshops in which he shares his artistic vision.
The Daniel Abreu Company was founded in 2004 and over the years has presented creative work in more than forty countries and been acclaimed by critics and audiences, besides receiving numerous awards.
He has at the same time continued working closely with other projects, such as directing for other groups and creators. His latest collaborative work includes folkloric influences from the Canary Islands or flamenco, alongside popular music performers such as Olga Cerpa and Mestisay and the flamenco-rooted artist Olga Pericet.
In 2018 he was appointed artistic director of the Lava Dance Company of El Auditorio de Tenerife, which he directed for two years.
The recognition earned over the course of his career includes: the 2014 National Dance Prize in the creation category, awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport; four Max Prizes, including Best Choreography in 2024 for La Materia, shared with Olga Pericet, and Best Dance Show, Best Choreography and Best Male Dancer for his work La Desnudez in 2018; and other merits such as the Godot Prize for Best Male Dancer in 2023 for Dalet (Da); the 2020 City of Cazorla Theatre Prize; the 2019 Réplica Prize for Best Show and Best Soundtrack for Abisal; the Prize for Best Direction at INDIFESTIVAL 2010; the Jury Prize for Choreography and the AISGE Foundation Prize for an outstanding dancer, to attend the American Dance Festival, at the 18th Madrid Choreography Fair (2005); and the mention as Most Outstanding Dancer at the 4th Maspalomas Choreography Fair (1999).
In 2015 he was named a Favourite Son by the Municipal Council of la Matanza de Acentejo in Tenerife.
